Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPAs) are natural areas of great value that form part of the Natura 2000 Network European. What is new in this case is that some of them are purely urban, a pioneering model developed in Extremadura; areas with an interesting population of protected birds, particularly lesser kestrels, a small insectivorous falcon that nests in the hollows of man-made structures.

UNESCO Territories has two Urban ZEPAs, Brozas in Tajo Internacional, which is also a historic site, and Saucedilla in Monfragüe, near which lies the Arrocampo Bird Park. A fantastic way to enjoy both the cultural heritage and the protected wildlife in a single visit.
