Who doesn’t love castles? They’re the best, with their knights, princesses, battles and dragons… Well, the dragons bit might be a bit of a stretch. The fact is, Mirabel Castle is fantastic for many reasons, the main one being that it’s still in use, although these days it’s more of a theatre and music, which, when you think about it, is much better than all that fighting and so on.

But what’s more, the views are truly magnificent: 360 degrees, 365 days a year. The fact is, the surroundings are simply marvellous – it’s as simple as that. To the north lies the village of Mirabel itself and, beyond that, the Sierra de Gredos mountain range; and at its foot, to the south, the green blanket of the Mirabel pasture stretching out, with its two spectacular cork oaks, which have been designated as ‘unique trees’. And a walking route, PR-CC 66 Umbría del Barbechoso, which is the best way to discover the Mediterranean vegetation of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve.
