The Vía de la Plata It is the great road and has been so for more than two millennia, because everything suggests that, before the Romans turned it into a road, It was already a route used for the trade in metals by the ancient inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula.

The fact is, it’s a a backbone running westwards between the north and the south, From Seville to Gijón, via Mérida and Astorga, the original road was converted into a Way of St James route in the Middle Ages, as it connects with the various routes that run through these regions to Santiago de Compostela.

UNESCO sites form part of this fantastic cultural and tourist route, as it crosses the Santa Marina and Arco mountain ranges via the Castaños Pass, in the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve, running alongside the Tajo Nature Trail.
