Cork oak from the Mirabel or Grueso communal pasture
The cork oak in the Dehesa, situated near the Padre Santo in Mirabel, is a 250-year-old tree whose shade, spanning 26 metres in diameter, offers you the chance to admire the surroundings and relax in one of Extremadura’s finest dehesas.

Two remarkable trees, one castle with the best views of the pasture and the The Umbría del Barbechoso route are situated very close to one another. It’s an exciting plan if you’re coming to see the remarkable cork oak in the Mirabel common pasture, more commonly known as ‘El Grueso’ due to the seven-metre circumference of its trunk. It isn’t the tallest in the club, as is 15 metres long, but he has such a well-balanced demeanour that you feel like giving him a hug – although we’d prefer you didn’t.

Both Padre Santo and El Grueso are so close that they could almost swap gossip about the pasture. Our specimen is a tad younger than his companion; he has some 250 years, which, in the age of remarkable trees, means being practically in the prime of life.

What is most striking about this giant is its ability to provide shelter. Its canopy stretches up to 26 metres wide, so if you find yourself in the blazing sun in the middle of a Grand Tour, it’s lovely and cool in the shade.
