Marmionda Castle, in Portezuelo, it’s one of those you see up there, perched on its crag, and you realise it’s been in “absolute control” mode for centuries. And with good reason: He was born during the Muslim period, it was revised by the Order of the Temple and this was reinforced by the the lords of Alcántara, who were very keen on tying up loose ends.

The path leading up to it winds its way through Mediterranean vegetation and rocks, and once at the top, there are pastures, mountain ranges and a solemn silence. But the real highlight here is the medieval gossip: The Tragedy of the Beautiful Marmionda.

Legend has it that the lord of the fortress’s daughter fell in love with a Christian captain — the typical borderland drama — and, following a skirmish at the foot of the wall, she thought she saw her lover dead. The logical solution? She threw herself into the void from the tower. The irony is that the knight was merely unconscious and, upon waking and witnessing the drama, ran his own sword through himself. Not even the best streaming platforms have scripts like this.
