Quartzite It is not just any old stone, even though it might seem that way: It is responsible for the fact that you see mountain ranges, ridges, cliffs and those distinctive landforms which are of particular importance in places such as UNESCO sites.

It all began about four hundred million years ago, when this area was covered by the sea and there was nothing but sand beneath it. Then came the pressure, the heat, time (a very long time) and voilà: the sand turned into quartzite. After that came folding, erosion and weathering, and the landscape became the spectacular sight we admire today.

The interesting thing is that we’re not just talking about geology for people who are all about the forehead, the pickaxe and the notebook; We’re talking about a route of 321 kilometres, designed to be explored by car with planned stops at geology, heritage and nature: castles, viewpoints, caves, rock-shelter sites and footpaths that transform the rock into a sacred landscape.
