Established two decades ago in the heart of the Monfragüe National Park and Biosphere Reserve, this fair is the «Woodstock» of the feathers, a ritual where the world of ornithology blends with the smell of sandwiches and rucksacks. And the thing is, late February, when winter is dragging on, there’s no better plan than popping round to Villarreal de San Carlos. That is where the FIO is set up, the leading bird fair in southern Europe.

This whole business – or rather, this winged mess – began in 2006 and, since then, has become the an international mecca for professionals and enthusiasts of birdwatching and nature. It’s not just about looking through binoculars; it’s a showcase of photography with Fotofio, talks by experts, workshops, guided tours and children’s activities for a whole weekend.
