Mesto de la Dehesa
This hybrid, known scientifically as ’Quercus x morisii Borzi’, is notable for its longevity and balanced growth habit. It is perfectly adapted to the dehesa ecosystem, combining the nobility of its ancestors: the holm oak and the cork oak.

To the west of the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark, near Berzocana, there is a species that defies conventional botanical classifications: the mesto de la Dehesa (commonly known as Nesto). Although at first glance it may look like a sturdy holm oak, the mesto is in fact a natural hybrid between the holm oak (Quercus ilex) and the cork oak (Quercus suber).

What makes this tree special is not just its imposing stature, not just its crown, which casts a generous and welcoming shade, but its resilience. It has survived for centuries in a dehesa environment, watching the passage of time with rock-like patience. When you touch its trunk, you’ll notice something unusual: it’s not quite like the bark of a cork oak, but it’s much rougher than that of an evergreen oak.

As it is publicly owned and easily accessible, it is the ideal spot to slow down and admire the fascinating biodiversity of the dehesa in UNESCO Sites.
