The western section of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve It is, probably, the least well-known. And that gives it a special appeal, because it harbours hidden gems that invite you to stop off, whilst maintaining a steady flow of visitors. For example, the Rivera del Castaño Reservoir, so secluded and hidden away at the foot of the Sierra de Santa Catalina, accessed via a small road flanked by Mediterranean vegetation, particularly in the the shade of the Barbechoso. Or the Mirabel pasture, with its truly unique cork oaks and its castle dominating everything.

Next comes Hacksaw, with its Christ of Victory, the Canchu del Lobu viewpoint or the Garganta del Fraile. And the villages along the Tagus, where you board the Monfragüe boat and sail to the vicinity of Peña Falcón.

All in all, a stylish and thoroughly enjoyable road.
