This scenic route is a real treat for those who enjoy exploring remote and little-known places – a feast for the eyes right in the heart of the Tajo Internacional.

This route starts in Membrío and takes you into one of the least well-known areas of International Tagus, passing through the Clavería mountain range and then Santiago de Alcántara, where you can visit the Dolmen Culture Interpretation Centre, the the Lagunita dolmens and the cave paintings in the Buraco cave. Quite an experience.

The route continues towards the intricate terrain of the Aurela River, where the road gets rough and you’d be well advised to drive slowly, as wildlife can appear at any bend; let’s live dangerously.

Finally, in Herrera de Alcántara the road winds down to the banks of the River Tagus and its lush, shady: holly, gall oaks, heather, buckthorn, laburnum… a botanist’s delight. This is, incidentally, where the 'Balcón del Tajo' sightseeing boat, which sets sail down the great river for a highly recommended river cruise.
