Megalithic culture in the International Tagus region
The megaliths of the Tajo Internacional are prehistoric dolmens and menhirs, erected through sheer ingenuity and imbued with spirituality; funerary monuments that still inspire awe and mystery today.

Valencia de Alcántara, Cedillo, Santiago de Alcántara, Herrera de Alcántara or the one itself Alcántara are part of the megalithic site in the Tajo Internacional Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest and best-preserved in Europe, particularly when we take into account all the examples on the other side of the Portuguese border, which form part of the same cultural identity.
We’re talking about dolmens and menhirs which have stood in the same spot for millennia, weathering storms, fires, borders… and architectural trends.
Imagine the prehistoric communities in the area organising these monumental projects without cranes, without plans and, of course, without safety protocols, erecting these monuments to bury their dead and mark their territory. Imagine the the dolmens of La Zafra, the Tierra Caída dolmen or the Cajirón dolmens, standing tall in silence amongst pastures, riverbanks and mountain ranges, and that feeling of walking through a landscape that dates back thousands of years.
