You cannot go through the Grand Tour of UNESCO Sites without crossing the Alcántara Bridge, just as in the epic and tragic finale of Frank Baer’s acclaimed novel of the same name, which we highly recommend reading. And the fact is, it is the undisputed king of selfies – which is hardly surprising when you consider that it has been standing tall over the River Tagus for almost two thousand years as if it were nothing. Its builder, Caius Julius Lacer, He was a real pro and wrote that his work would last forever; and boy, was he right!

With its 58 metres high and their six majestic arches, walking across it makes you feel empowered inside and out. It is sturdy, imposing and, above all, timeless.

And not just the bridge: its Triumphal Arch, the temple at one end and even the nearby Roman bridge at Segura, its twin town on the River Erjas on the Portuguese border, form a “Ave Caesar” complex.
