The ‘Orders of Chivalry’ identity centre, housed in the church of the Convent of St Benedict, explains the history of the military orders; warriors, administrators, landowners and, at times, spiritual guides.

This building, for example, was the headquarters of the Order of Alcántara. Just walking through the central nave and its magnificent chancel is well worth the effort. Through artefacts, costumes and information panels, you’ll discover how these knights defended the border, repopulated the territory, administered justice, collected taxes, built fortresses and church buildings, and served the Crown. What a stressful job!
