This little natural shelter, nestled amongst the quartzite crests of the Puerto Roque cliffs, is a natural viewpoint with aspectacular views of the Sierra de la Paja and the Portuguese-Spanish border.

But what really matters is on the inside, a a collection of schematic cave paintings so unusual that some of them are painted with white and black pigments rather than the typical ochre colours. For that reason are included in the European ‘Prehistoric Rock Art Routes’ itineraries.

The climb up to the shelter is short – just 500 metres – but challenging; in fact, you have to use your hands in some sections where there are ropes and ladders fixed to the rock. But it’s well worth the effort, because Along the way, there are also ichnofossils of *Cruziana* and many birds, particularly griffon vultures from a nearby colony.
