In Cañamero, our ancestors were already creating some really striking graffiti. The proof is in the Chiquita Cave (or Álvarez Cave), a strategic spot in the Ruecas River Gorge, whose paintings are part of the European cultural route ‘Routes of Prehistoric Rock Art’.

It isn’t a cave as such, but rather a quartzite coat which also served as their canvas, on which they depicted their world through these valuable cave paintings in a schematic style.

It’s very easy to get to the shelter; you can even walk there from Cañamero, which is the best option, and this will allow you to enjoy the River Ruecas, the Appalachian-style relief in the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark and of the numerous birds who live in these crests. And if you come with children, they’ll feel like Indiana Jones on a treasure hunt, of course.
