The site is like a “demo” of the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark, but without any hills or breaking a sweat. As soon as you walk in, you come across a model a giant map of the region, perfect for pointing things out and saying, “Look, that’s where we were.” You then pass through several rooms where they explain the habitats within the SPA, the wildlife found in each one and even the area’s ethnographic heritage: festivals, traditional architecture, crafts… in short, you come away knowing more about the place than some of the locals. There’s also a a room dedicated to the geopark, featuring fossils, rocks and minerals, in case you fancy swapping birds for stones for a bit. And at the end they show you a video about the SPA which, surprisingly, isn’t your typical documentary.

The best thing to do is to go up to the terrace viewing point, with a view to the Ruecas Gorge and the reservoir. On a nice day, you can just hang out there for a while doing nothing, which is a lovely way to spend your time. The visit is free, accessible and guided if you ask for one.
