The name of the town gives you a clue as to what you’re going to find there. The centre is It’s a small place, but a very interesting one, because it plunges you straight into the history of lime and how it was produced here for centuries.

They teach you how to use the tools and explain the process of extracting and firing limestone and round off the visit with an audiovisual presentation which helps you understand everything without making life difficult. And then there’s the best bit: to go and see the kilns for real, which still stand scattered around the area and give you a sense of what it was like when they were in full operation.

What’s more, you can take a leisurely stroll around the area and round off your day with a walk through Alía, or visit the Peña Strait (yet another geosite) or take a stroll along the Trucha Gorge, which has one of the the largest and best-preserved groups of parrots or Prunus lusitanica, a tree that has survived from the Tertiary period, when paleotropical flora predominated.
