From Zarza la Mayor, The northernmost town in the Tajo Internacional region, this route offers a fascinating mix of landscapes, ranging from the residents along the Tagus, including the spectacular the pastures of Mata de Alcántara, the plains and finally the the pine forests of Garrovillas de Alconétar, one of the few examples of forest of native stone pines in UNESCO territories.

If it were just the scenery, that alone would be reason enough to explore it, but the fact is that this route can take quite a long time if you want to stop and see everything: the the Erjas canyons, the Peñafiel Castle, the Roman bridge at Alcántara, the Cabezo menhir, the visitor centres at the Orders of Chivalry and of the Commandery of Peñafiel, the the Alcántara dolmens, the square in Garrovillas de Alconétar… Phew! You’ll have to make a choice or take a few days off.
